Why you should never flush feminine sanitary products

Never flush sanitary productsThis one is for all the ladies out there! Have you ever put a tampon down the toilet? Of course you have! Why? Because its convenient! But we are here to tell you today that feminine and “flushable” products are in fact NOT flushable!

Our plumbers go to calls across Toronto, and at least once a week the blockage is caused by feminine products or “flushable” wipes. Most ladies’ stalls do contain a small trash can located close to the toilet for proper disposal, but they are not being used all the time. Furthermore, wipes are now being marketed as “flushable” when they are not!

How these products can cause blockages:

The average size tampon can grow to be 10 times the size once they have fully absorbed fluid (remember those videos?). They also do not break down, making it very easy for them to get caught in a drain and cause a backup. Once caught they can create an easy way for toilet paper and more solid waste to build up and cause a drain blockage. This is especially true if the toilet is in a high use area.

“Flushable” wipes are also a common cause of drain backups. These too can get caught in the drain, creating an easy way for a blockage to build up.

Other common bathroom items that should never be flushed:

  • Cotton balls
  • Paper towel (we see this a lot)
  • Dental floss
  • Baby wipes
  • Band-Aid’s
  • Condoms
  • Cigarettes
  • Diapers
  • Cooking grease

*Public Service Announcement*

Please do not flush items that should not go down the drain. Use the little trash can provided in the washroom so these items can be disposed of properly and not cause plumbing issues.

Most public washrooms have signs posted on the doors reminding customers. Make this a rule in your home as well. It might just save you from an overflowing toilet one day!
