How to Measure for a Replacement Toilet

Nothing lasts forever and there comes a time that all toilets will have to be replaced. Whether you cannot get repair parts for your current model or you wish to upgrade to something more water efficient, selecting a replacement toilet can be tricky. It is essential to get a few key measurements right when selecting your new throne.

Replacement Toilet MeasurementsHow to measure for a replacement toilet

Height – if you have shelves or cabinetry above your toilet, it is important to measure the total height of the toilet. There are a lot of different models on the market and knowing this measurement will help narrow down your search. Measure from the floor to the top of the tank, this is the total height.

Fun Fact: You can get toilets in “Right-height” which is slightly taller than average. These taller toilets mean less space you have to lower down which is an advantage for anyone who is physically challenged.

Depth – Toilet bowls come in either round or elongated styles. Round bowls take up less space while elongated are a little more comfortable. To get the measurement of the bowl, measure from the front edge of the toilet bowl to the back of the tank.

Rough In – The rough in measurement refers to the plumbing specific measurement of where the drain and toilet meet. To measure this, measure from the wall behind the toilet to the bolts (there will be caps hiding these from view around the base of the toilet). If you have four bolts, only measure to the rear set of bolts.

Using these measurements, you can do some research and purchase a new replacement toilet online. As professional plumbers, we suggest buying an American Standard toilet. This brand has been around a long time and replacement parts are widely available.
