Drain Snaking vs Hydro Jetting

Clogged Kitchen Sink

Clogged drains are more than just annoying. They can cause up to $40,000 worth of damage to your home if they lead to a flood. Drain snaking and hydro jetting are two effective methods for resolving clogs and are both much cheaper than repairing flood damage.

Learn about the major differences between drain snaking and hydro jetting so that you can clear blocked drains in your home.

What Is Drain Snaking?

Drain snaking makes use of a ‘plumber’s snake’ or auger to get rid of a clog in your sink or bathtub. Here are a few different types of drain snakes:

Auger – often used in bathtubs and bathroom sinks, an auger is operated by hand and has a long tube with a hand crank at the top and a cable corkscrew auger at the bottom.

Snake – This is the most traditional piece of drain clearing equipment. The snake is inserted into the drain and worked through the blockage to release it. With different heads and cable thicknesses we are able to relieve a lot of different drain blockages, however, if the blockage is back enough you will require additional drain cleaning.

Drain Snaking vs Hydro Jetting

High-Speed Chain Snake – This is a new piece of technology our team is using to not only clear blockages but also rehabilitate the pipe in the process. Much like a traditional snake the cable is fed into the drain to the blockage point and turned on. The chains attached to the head rotate at high speeds, reaching the drain pipe from wall to wall and cutting off the buildup/roots/grease causing the issue. It is very safe on your drain and the speed is managed by the technician to ensure safety and accuracy.

Trouble Shooters Plumbing & Drains offers top-quality drain snaking and drain clearing services. With our technology we can truly clear any blockage.

What Is Hydro Jetting?

Hydro jetting involves a high-pressure hose and a nozzle designed specifically for clearing drain clogs. The hose is connected to a machine that allows pressurized water to flow through it.

The nozzle is placed into the drain, and the pressurized water is used to dismantle any clogs or obstructions within. The water pressure is strong enough to remove almost all clogged items, including debris, food grease, calcium buildup and more!

Hydro jetting generally requires a ‘cleanout.’ These are typically installed on a branch or directly on your main drain. Our team always inspects the drain before we start and after to ensure we got through the issue.

Which Is Better?

The service used will depend on your specific plumbing issue and the plumbers advice. Hydro jetting is a powerful option and is often used for bigger, more problematic clogs. It helps reduce build-up in drains, keeping them clog-free for longer.

However, high-speed drain snaking is becoming one of our go to options for very tough build up and pipe rehabilitation.
